This Talk discusses the key design considerations of antennas in multiple-
input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems from an antenna
engineering perspective. First, the effect of antenna design on diversity
performance is discussed by analyzing the formulas used for calculation of
envelope correlation coefficients. The formulas are based on S-parameters
and radiated fields. Then, the effect of inter-element mutual coupling on
antenna efficiency and correlation is investigated. After that, the impact
of mutual coupling on diversity performance is highlighted. Furthermore, two
and three-dimensional patterns of the envelope correlation coefficient are
presented to elaborate the evaluation of diversity performance of MIMO
systems. Based on the discussion, the design considerations of antennas for
MIMO systems are summarized from an antenna engineering perspective. In the
end of talk, one UWB diversity antenna and one compact three-element MIMO
antenna system for indoor 2.4 GHz WLAN applications are exemplified.
Dr Zhi Ning Chen received his BEng, MEng, PhD, and DoE degrees all in
Electrical Engineering from Institute of Communications Engineering, China
and University of Tsukuba, Japan, respectively. During 1988-1995, he worked
as Teaching Assistant, Lecturer, Postdoctoral Fellow and later Associate
Professor at Institute of Communications Engineering and Southeast
University, China. During 1995-1997, he joined in City University of Hong
Kong, China as Research Assistant, later Research Fellow. In 1997, he
conducted his research at University of Tsukuba, Japan as JSPS Fellow. In
2001 and 2004, he visited University of Tsukuba under JSPS Fellowship
Program (senior level). In 2004, he worked at IBM T. J. Watson Research
Center, USA as Academic Visitor. Since 1999, he has worked with Institute
for Infocomm Research as Member of Technical Staff (MTS) and later Principal
MTS. He is currently appointed as Principal Scientist and Head for RF &
Optical Department as well as PIs for multiple academic and industry
projects. He is concurrently holding the adjunct/guest professorships at
Southeast University, Nanjing University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and
National University of Singapore. He has also been Technical Advisor of
Compex Systems since 2006.
Dr Chen has organized many international technical events as general chairs,
technical program committee chairs, and key members of organizing
committees. He founded and chiared International Workshop on Antenna
Technology (iWAT) in 2005, now which has become one of the most important
IEEE antenna events.
Dr Chen has published 260 journal and conference papers. He authored and
edited books entitled Broadband Planar Antennas, UWB Wireless Communication,
Antennas for Portable Devices, and Antennas for Base Station in Wireless
Communications. He also contributed to the books of UWB Antennas and
Propagation for Communications, Radar, and Imaging as well as Antenna
Engineering Handbook. He is holding 25 granted and filed patents with 18
licensed deals with industry. He is the recipient of the CST University
Publication Award 2008, IEEE AP-S Honorable Mention Student Paper Contest
2008, IES Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award 2006, I2R Quarterly Best
Paper Award 2004, and IEEE iWAT 2005 Best Poster Award.
Dr Chen’s current research interest includes applied electromagnetics,
antennas for applications of microwave, mmW, submmW, and THz in
communication and imaging systems.
Dr Chen is a Fellow of the IEEE for his contribution to small and broadband
antennas for wireless applications. (www1.i2r.a-star.edu.sg/~chenzn)
